Manaslu is the eighth highest mountain out of 14 eight-thousanders, in the world at 8,163 meters above sea level. It is located in the Mansiri Himal, part of the Nepalese Himalayas, in the west-central part of Nepal. Its name, which means “mountain of the spirit”, comes from the Sanskrit word Manasa, meaning “intellect” or “soul”. It was first climbed on May 9, 1956, by Artur Haizer, Gyalzen Norbu, and Toshio Imanishi. Manaslu is also known as ‘Killer Mountain’.
